bring about whatever trouble possible, causing misunder- standings between the leaders of the Government, and finally endeavoured to secure control of the Kuomintang, whet out into the Provinces and preached to the farmers and labourers the principles of Communism, decrying the principles of Dr. Sun by saying these were the principles of the capitalist, and upholding their own methods of
Government as being the only loyal rules for the people to follow. The leaders of the Kuomintang to-day, however, fully realize that the Communists were not sincere in their
so-called co-operation with the Kuomintang and its
principles of Nationalism, Democracy and State Socialism.
As soon as the Southern Armies reached Hankow
and Wuhan, the supporters of Communism became more active
than ever. When it was placed to remove the seat of Goverment to Wuhan, Borodin strongly opposed this move,
fearing the Kuomintang would get there before his co-
workers had first undermined the regions in the North with anti-Nationalist propaganda. In stirring up the Civil populace the Reds slogans of their own, and using
the Red flag in place of the Nationalist moon. They had
definite despatches, Mr. Lien Lai asserted, from Moscow
to try to involve the Kuomintang into diplomatic troubles
with the foreign powers. General Chang Kai-shek was one of
their power to get him out of control bitterest enemies,
and the Reds did everything in their power to get him out
of control of the Southern Armies.
The destructive influence of Communism in
the ranks of the Nationalist rank and file was fully
realized, but they were unable to combat this evil
influence within until they had secured more power. The
early capture of Nanking and Shanghai was quite beyond
their expectations, but they did not wish to turn upon
